Lyme disease is a tick-borne infection caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi. The first symptom is usually a characteristic pink or red rash that starts as a small red spot that gradually spreads in a much larger circle. Note that Lyme disease has never been proven to be present in Australia and cases are typically linked to overseas travel.

What we test

Western Blot

The Lyme Western Blot is a qualitative immunoassay in which antibodies specific to the B. burgdorferi antigens on a membrane strip are visualized. It is a qualitative test and is generally more sensitive and specific than the ELISA and IFA tests.

Western Blot IgM

IgM antibodies may reflect a relatively recent Lyme Disease infection and usually disappear after eight weeks post-exposure. However note that IgM antibodies may also be detected in individuals who do not have Lyme disease.
Western Blot IgG

IgG antibodies are typically a sign of an older infection. IgM antibodies usually disappear after eight weeks post-exposure, whereas IgG remains in the blood for a very long time.
